Medical course in the United Kingdom

15 August 2022 Binish Joseph, Founder & CEO Campus Overseas, Calicut.

Medicine is an exciting career where every patient is an individual, and there is a chance to learn something new every day. If you are passionate about studying to become a medical doctor. Few steps in my observations
Applying to a medical course in the UK is quite different to other courses, and you must familiarise yourself with the application process well in advance to allow yourself enough time to submit your application.
One of the critical dates to keep in mind is the UCAS application deadline for medicine, which is in October - this is three months earlier than other courses, and you must submit it on time.
Remember that University offering medical course differs in the selection process and the teaching. You must review this information on the university website before deciding where to apply.
Another critical consideration is what standardised test your University uses to screen applicants. It could be the UKCAT (United Kingdom Clinical Aptitude Test) or the BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test). Each University has its preference, so it is essential to read about these tests and which ones you might have to sit.
You will also need to draft a personal statement, known as SOP, that explores why you want to study medicine, your achievements so far and why you are the right type of person for the course.
An excellent method to convince your commitment to study medicine is by undertaking some relevant work experience. It could involve shadowing a doctor at a hospital or clinic where you will have the opportunity to see first-hand the work-life of a doctor. Following a doctor can be challenging to arrange, and don't be disappointed if this is impossible. You can undertake work experience in any healthcare setting, and it can be with any healthcare team member - such as a nurse or paramedic.
Wherever you undertake your work experience, it is essential to include your experiences in your personal statement. Rather than just listing your activities, I would encourage you to reflect on your experiences; you can write about a particularly thought-provoking episode and how it made you feel or what it made you realise.
Once you have submitted the application and taken UKCAT/BMAT test, you must wait for your application status, whether shortlisted for an interview or not. This period can often be an anxious time, but it is essential to stay positive! Several free online resources and books can help prepare you for the interview.
Once you clear the interview, University will offer you a conditional study offer. This conditional offer will usually state a minimum score in your final school exams and other conditions - each University's requirement can be different.
Suppose you get offered a place to study medicine in the UK – good! If not, do not be disheartened and remember to never give up on your dreams; you can always work on your application and re-apply the following year.
Finally, it is essential not to get overwhelmed by the application process and to enjoy your journey to becoming a medical student and, eventually, a fully qualified doctor.
